I have been guilty of speaking in hype language.
It was not that far back that I use the term “XNet” ( or X-Internet as Forrester has defined it). XNet is probably Web 2.0. I am not sure anymore.
“Why Web 2.0?”, one would ask.
In other industries, when they have something better, they would say, “New Improved Formulae”. Not our industry. We use version controls; Web 1.0, Web 2.0, Web 3.0
And if suffering from Web 2.0 hype is not enough, developers like myself suffer from chasing the “holy grail” of software development.
“Scripting is slow, why aren’t you writing in C”
“Java is great because it is OO and has garbage collection.”
“The future is dynamic languages”
“Python makes Java complicated”
“Ruby on Rails“… and of course, there is “Rebol”
Often this hype coincides with the rise of some cool apps or company or even celebrity developers.
Eg. Python with Google. RubyonRails with BasecampHQ. Rebol with Carl Sassenrath.
I have nothing against such “mood swings”. It’s just that at times, it only seems like yesterday that everyone is saying how great Python is …and the next thing..all the raves about Ruby.
I have worked long enough in this industry to understand that such hypes is like the up and downs of Wall St.
What is important, moving forward, is to develop great products and solutions. Solve my customers needs and B.efficientÂ
